Bearing Witness to the Light
Jesus
went unto the mount of Olives. 2 And early in the morning he came again into
the temple, and all the people came unto him; and he sat down, and taught them.
3 And the scribes and Pharisees brought unto him a woman taken in adultery; and
when they had set her in the midst, 4 They say unto him, Master, this woman was
taken in adultery, in the very act. 5 Now Moses in the law commanded us, that
such should be stoned: but what sayest thou? 6
This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But
Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as
though he heard them not. 7 So when they continued asking him, he lifted up
himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone
at her. 8 And
again he stooped down, and wrote on the ground. 9 And they which heard it,
being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning
at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the
woman standing in the midst. 10 When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none
but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers?
hath no man condemned thee? 11 She said, No man, Lord. And
Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.
12
Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that
followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. 13 The Pharisees therefore
said unto him, Thou bearest record of thyself; thy record is not true. 14 Jesus
answered and said unto them, Though I bear record of myself, yet my record is true:
for I know whence I came, and whither I go; but ye cannot tell whence I come,
and whither I go.
15 Ye
judge after the flesh; I judge no man. 16 And yet if I judge, my judgment is true: for I am not alone,
but I and the Father that sent me. 17 It is also written in
your law, that the testimony of two men is true. 18 I am one that bear witness of myself, and the
Father that sent me beareth witness of me. 19 Then said they unto him, Where is thy Father?
Jesus answered, Ye neither know me, nor my Father: if ye had known me, ye should
have known my Father also. 20 These words spake Jesus in the treasury, as he taught in the
temple: and no man laid hands on him; for his hour was not yet come.
And
as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth. 2
And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his
parents, that he was born blind? 3 Jesus answered, Neither hath this
man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest
in him. 4 I must work the
works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can
work. 5 As long as I am in
the world, I am the light of the world. 6 When he had thus spoken, he spat on the ground,
and made clay of the spittle, and he anointed the eyes of the blind man with
the clay, 7 And said unto him, Go, wash in the
pool of Siloam,
(which is by interpretation, Sent.) He went his way therefore, and washed, and
came seeing.
14
Ye
are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. 15 Neither do men
light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth
light unto all that are in the house. 16 Let your light so
shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father
which is in heaven.
16
And I
will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may
abide with you for ever; 17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because
it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with
you, and shall be in you.
18
I
will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you. 19 Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me:
because I live, ye shall live also. 20 At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and
ye in me, and I in you. 21 He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth
me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and
will manifest myself to him. 22 Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt
manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world? 23 Jesus answered and said
unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love
him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. 24 He that loveth me
not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the
Father’s which sent me.
25
These
things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you. 26 But the Comforter,
which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall
teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I
have said unto you. 27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world
giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be
afraid.
28
Ye
have heard how I said unto you, I go away, and come again unto you. If
ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because
I said, I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I. 29 And now I have
told you before it come to pass, that, when it is come to pass, ye might
believe.
Acts 1:1-8
The
former treatise have I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do
and teach, 2 Until the day in which he was taken up, after that he through the
Holy Ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom he had chosen: 3 To whom
also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being
seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom
of God: 4 And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that
they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which,
saith he, ye have heard of me. 5 For John truly
baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days
hence.
6
When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the
kingdom to Israel? 7 And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the
seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power. 8 But ye shall
receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be
witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and
unto the uttermost part of the earth.
6
There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7 The same came for
a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might
believe. 8 He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that
Light.
Luke 1:5-17
5
There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain priest named
Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of
Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth. 6 And they were both righteous before
God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless. 7
And they had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren, and they both were now
well stricken in years. 8 And it came to pass, that while he executed the
priest’s office before God in the order of his course, 9 According to the
custom of the priest’s office, his lot was to burn incense when he went into
the temple of the Lord. 10 And the whole multitude of the people were praying
without at the time of incense. 11 And there appeared unto him an angel of the
Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense. 12 And when Zacharias
saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him. 13 But the angel said
unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth
shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John. 14 And thou shalt
have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth. 15 For he shall be
great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink;
and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother’s womb. 16 And
many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God. 17 And he
shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the
fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make
ready a people prepared for the Lord. [1]
