Watch!
Matthew 24:29-51
The
Coming of the Son of Man
(Mk
13.24—27; Lk 21.25—28)
29
“Immediately after the suffering of
those days
the sun will be darkened,
and the moon will not give its light;
the stars will fall from heaven,
and the powers of heaven will be shaken.
30 Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all
the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see ‘the Son of Man coming on
the clouds of heaven’ with power and great glory. 31 And he will send out his angels with a loud trumpet call, and
they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the
other.
The
Lesson of the Fig Tree
(Mk
13.28—31; Lk 21.29—33)
32
“From the fig tree learn its lesson:
as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts forth its leaves, you know that
summer is near. 33 So also,
when you see all these things, you know that he g
is near, at the very gates. 34 Truly I tell you, this generation will not pass away until
all these things have taken place. 35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.
The
Necessity for Watchfulness
(Mk
13.32—37; Lk 17.26—27, 34—35; 21.34—36)
36
“But about that day and hour no one
knows, neither the angels of heaven, nor the Son, h but only the Father.
37 For as the days of Noah were, so will be
the coming of the Son of Man. 38 For
as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and
giving in marriage, until the day Noah entered the ark, 39 and they knew nothing until the flood came and swept them all
away, so too will be the coming of the Son of Man. 40 Then two will be in the field; one will be taken and one will
be left. 41 Two women will be
grinding meal together; one will be taken and one will be left. 42 Keep awake therefore, for you
do not know on what day i your Lord is coming. 43 But understand this: if the owner of the house had known in
what part of the night the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and
would not have let his house be broken into. 44 Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is
coming at an unexpected hour.
Mark 13:24-37
The
Coming of the Son of Man
(Mt
24.29—31; Lk 21.25—28)
24
“But in those days, after that
suffering,
the sun will be darkened,
and the moon will not give its light,
25 and the stars will be falling from heaven,
and the powers in the heavens will be shaken.
26 Then they will see ‘the Son of Man coming in clouds’ with great
power and glory. 27 Then he
will send out the angels, and gather his elect from the four winds, from the
ends of the earth to the ends of heaven.
The
Lesson of the Fig Tree
(Mt
24.32—35; Lk 21.29—33)
28
“From the fig tree learn its lesson:
as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts forth its leaves, you know that
summer is near. 29 So also,
when you see these things taking place, you know that he e is near, at the very
gates. 30 Truly I tell you, this

Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words
will not pass away.
The
Necessity for Watchfulness
(Mt
24.36—44; Lk 21.34—36)
32 “But about
that day or hour no one knows, neither the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but
only the Father. 33 Beware,
keep alert; f
for you do not know when the time will come. 34
It is like a man going on a journey, when he
leaves home and puts his slaves in charge, each with his work, and commands the
doorkeeper to be on the watch. 35 Therefore, keep awake—for you do not
know when the master of the house will come, in the evening, or at midnight, or
at cockcrow, or at dawn, 36 or else
he may find you asleep when he comes suddenly. 37 And what I say to you I say to all: Keep awake.”
Luke 21:25-36
The
Coming of the Son of Man
(Mt
24.29—31; Mk 13.24—27)
25
“There will be signs in the sun, the
moon, and the stars, and on the earth distress among nations confused by the
roaring of the sea and the waves. 26 People will faint from fear and foreboding of what is coming
upon the world, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 27 Then they will see ‘the Son of Man coming in a cloud’ with
power and great glory. 28 Now when
these things begin to take place, stand up and raise your heads, because your
redemption is drawing near.”
The
Lesson of the Fig Tree
(Mt
24.32—35; Mk 13.28—31)
29
Then he told them a parable: “Look at the fig tree and all the trees; 30 as soon as they sprout leaves you can see for yourselves and
know that summer is already near. 31 So
also, when you see these things taking place, you know that the kingdom of God
is near. 32 Truly I tell you, this
generation will not pass away until all things have taken place. 33
Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words
will not pass away.
Exhortation
to Watch
(Mt
24.36—44; Mk 13.32—37)
34
“Be on guard so that your hearts are
not weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of this life,
and that day does not catch you unexpectedly, 35 like a trap. For it will come upon all who live on the face
of the whole earth. 36 Be alert at all times, praying that you may have the strength to
escape all these things that will take place, and to stand before the Son of
Man.”
Matthew 25:1-30
The
Parable of the Ten Bridesmaids
25
“Then the kingdom of heaven will be like this. Ten
bridesmaids a took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom. b 2 Five of
them were foolish, and five were wise. 3 When the foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with
them; 4 but the wise took flasks of
oil with their lamps. 5 As the
bridegroom was delayed, all of them became drowsy and slept. 6 But at midnight there was a shout, ‘Look! Here is the
bridegroom! Come out to meet him.’ 7 Then
all those bridesmaids c got up and trimmed their lamps. 8 The foolish said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, for
our lamps are going out.’ 9 But the
wise replied, ‘No! there will not be enough for you and for us; you had better
go to the dealers and buy some for yourselves.’ 10 And while they went to buy it, the bridegroom came, and those
who were ready went with him into the wedding banquet; and the door was shut.
11 Later the other bridesmaids d came also, saying,
‘Lord, lord, open to us.’ 12 But he
replied, ‘Truly I tell you, I do not know you.’ 13 Keep awake therefore, for you
know neither the day nor the hour. e
The
Parable of the Talents
(Lk
19.11—27)
14
“For it is as if a man, going on a
journey, summoned his slaves and entrusted his property to them;
15 to one he gave five talents, f to another two, to
another one, to each according to his ability. Then he went away. 16
The one who had received the five talents went
off at once and traded with them, and made five more talents. 17 In the same way, the one who had the two talents made two
more talents. 18 But the one who had
received the one talent went off and dug a hole in the ground and hid his
master’s money. 19 After a long time
the master of those slaves came and settled accounts with them. 20 Then the one who had received the five talents came forward,
bringing five more talents, saying, ‘Master, you handed over to me five
talents; see, I have made five more talents.’ 21 His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and trustworthy
slave; you have been trustworthy in a few things, I will put you in charge of
many things; enter into the joy of your master.’ 22 And the one with the two talents also came forward, saying,
‘Master, you handed over to me two talents; see, I have made two more talents.’
23 His master said to him, ‘Well done, good
and trustworthy slave; you have been trustworthy in a few things, I will put
you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your master.’ 24
Then the one who had received the one talent also
came forward, saying, ‘Master, I knew that you were a harsh man, reaping where
you did not sow, and gathering where you did not scatter seed; 25 so I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the
ground. Here you have what is yours.’ 26 But his master replied, ‘You wicked and lazy slave! You knew,
did you, that I reap where I did not sow, and gather where I did not scatter?
27 Then you ought to have invested my money
with the bankers, and on my return I would have received what was my own with
interest. 28 So take the talent from
him, and give it to the one with the ten talents. 29 For to all those who have, more will be given, and they will
have an abundance; but from those who have nothing, even what they have will be
taken away. 30 As for this worthless
slave, throw him into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and
gnashing of teeth.’
Luke 12:1-40
A
Warning against Hypocrisy
12
Meanwhile, when the crowd gathered by the thousands, so that they trampled on
one another, he began to speak first to his disciples, “Beware
of the yeast of the Pharisees, that is, their hypocrisy. 2 Nothing is covered up that will not be uncovered, and nothing
secret that will not become known. 3 Therefore
whatever you have said in the dark will be heard in the light, and what you
have whispered behind closed doors will be proclaimed from the housetops.
Exhortation
to Fearless Confession
(Mt
10.26—33)
4
“I tell you, my friends, do not fear
those who kill the body, and after that can do nothing more.
5 But I will warn you whom to fear: fear him
who, after he has killed, has authority a
to cast into hell. b Yes, I tell you, fear
him! 6 Are not five sparrows sold for
two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten in God’s sight. 7 But even the hairs of your head are all counted. Do not be
afraid; you are of more value than many sparrows.
8
“And I tell you, everyone who
acknowledges me before others, the Son of Man also will acknowledge before the
angels of God; 9 but
whoever denies me before others will be denied before the angels of God.
10 And everyone who speaks a word against
the Son of Man will be forgiven; but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit
will not be forgiven. 11 When they
bring you before the synagogues, the rulers, and the authorities, do not worry
about how c you are to defend yourselves or what you are to say; 12
for the Holy Spirit will teach you at that very
hour what you ought to say.”
The
Parable of the Rich Fool
13
Someone in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell
my brother to divide the family inheritance with me.” 14 But he said
to him, “Friend, who set me to be a judge or arbitrator
over you?” 15 And he said to them, “Take
care! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; for one’s life does not
consist in the abundance of possessions.” 16 Then he told
them a parable: “The land of a rich man produced
abundantly. 17 And he thought to
himself, ‘What should I do, for I have no place to store my crops?’ 18
Then he said, ‘I will do this: I will pull down
my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my
goods. 19 And I will say to my soul,
Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be
merry.’ 20 But God said to him, ‘You
fool! This very night your life is being demanded of you. And the things you
have prepared, whose will they be?’ 21 So it is with those who store up treasures for themselves but
are not rich toward God.”
Do
Not Worry
(Mt
6.19—21, 25—34)
22
He said to his disciples, “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you
will eat, or about your body, what you will wear. 23 For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing.
24 Consider the ravens: they neither sow nor
reap, they have neither storehouse nor barn, and yet God feeds them. Of how
much more value are you than the birds! 25 And can any of you by worrying add a single hour to your span
of life? d 26 If then you are not able to do so small a thing as that, why
do you worry about the rest? 27 Consider
the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; e yet I tell you, even
Solomon in all his glory was not clothed like one of these. 28 But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive
today and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more will he clothe
you—you of little faith! 29 And do
not keep striving for what you are to eat and what you are to drink, and do not
keep worrying. 30 For it is the
nations of the world that strive after all these things, and your Father knows
that you need them. 31 Instead,
strive for his f kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well.
32
“Do not be afraid, little flock, for
it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom.
33 Sell your possessions, and give alms.
Make purses for yourselves that do not wear out, an unfailing treasure in
heaven, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. 34 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Watchful
Slaves
35
“Be dressed for action and have your
lamps lit; 36 be like
those who are waiting for their master to return from the wedding banquet, so
that they may open the door for him as soon as he comes and knocks. 37
Blessed are those slaves whom the master finds
alert when he comes; truly I tell you, he will fasten his belt and have them
sit down to eat, and he will come and serve them. 38 If he comes during the middle of the night, or near dawn, and
finds them so, blessed are those slaves.
39
“But know this: if the owner of the
house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he
g would not have let his house be broken into. 40 You also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an
unexpected hour.”
1 Thessalonians 5:1-6
5 Now concerning the times
and the seasons, brothers and sisters,a you do not need to have
anything written to you. 2 For you yourselves know very well that
the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. 3 When they
say, “There is peace and security,” then sudden destruction will come upon
them, as labor pains come upon a pregnant woman, and there will be no escape! 4
But you, beloved,b are not in darkness, for that day to
surprise you like a thief; 5 for you are all children of light and
children of the day; we are not of the night or of darkness. 6 So
then let us not fall asleep as others do, but let us keep awake and be sober;
Revelation 3:1-6
The
Message to Sardis
3
“And to the angel of the church in Sardis write: These
are the words of him who has the seven spirits of God and the seven stars:
“I know your works; you have a name of being alive, but you are
dead. 2 Wake up, and
strengthen what remains and is on the point of death, for I have not found your
works perfect in the sight of my God. 3 Remember then what you received and heard; obey it, and
repent. If you do not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what
hour I will come to you. 4 Yet you
have still a few persons in Sardis who have not soiled their clothes; they will
walk with me, dressed in white, for they are worthy. 5 If you conquer, you will be clothed like them in white robes,
and I will not blot your name out of the book of life; I will confess your name
before my Father and before his angels. 6 Let anyone who has an ear listen to what the Spirit is saying
to the churches.

Paul
Speaks to the Ephesian Elders
17
From Miletus he sent a message to Ephesus,
asking the elders of the church to meet him. 18 When they came to
him, he said to them:
“You
yourselves know how I lived among you the entire time from the first day that I
set foot in Asia, 19 serving the Lord with all humility and with
tears, enduring the trials that came to me through the plots of the Jews. 20
I did not shrink from doing anything helpful, proclaiming the message to
you and teaching you publicly and from house to house, 21 as I testified
to both Jews and Greeks about repentance toward God and faith toward our Lord
Jesus. 22 And now, as a captive to the Spirit,c I am on my way
to Jerusalem, not knowing what will happen to me there, 23 except
that the Holy Spirit testifies to me in every city that imprisonment and
persecutions are waiting for me. 24 But I do not count my life of
any value to myself, if only I may finish my course and the ministry that I
received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the good news of God’s grace.
25
“And now I know that none of you, among whom I
have gone about proclaiming the kingdom, will ever see my face again. 26 Therefore
I declare to you this day that I am not responsible for the blood of any of
you, 27 for I did not shrink from declaring to you the whole purpose
of God. 28 Keep watch over yourselves and over all the flock, of
which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of Godd
that he obtained with the blood of his own Son.e 29 I know
that after I have gone, savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the
flock. 30 Some even from your own group will come distorting the
truth in order to entice the disciples to follow them. 31 Therefore be alert, remembering that for three years I did not
cease night or day to warn everyone with tears. 32 And now I commend
you to God and to the message of his grace, a message that is able to build you
up and to give you the inheritance among all who are sanctified. 33 I
coveted no one’s silver or gold or clothing. 34 You know for
yourselves that I worked with my own hands to support myself and my companions.
35 In all this I have given you an example that by such work we must
support the weak, remembering the words of the Lord Jesus, for he himself said,
‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ ”
36
When he had finished speaking, he knelt down
with them all and prayed. 37 There was much weeping among them all;
they embraced Paul and kissed him, 38 grieving especially because of
what he had said, that they would not see him again. Then they brought him to
the ship.
Hebrews 13:17

Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they
are keeping watch over your souls and will give
an account. Let them do this with joy and not with sighing—for that would be
harmful to you.[1]
